美国芝加哥国际艺博会（CIAE），由美国著名画商、芝加哥湖滨艺术中心董事长约翰·威尔逊利用密执安湖畔的海军码头为展场，于1979年创办。它自第一届开始， 即坚持严格的参展评审制度，并以其高质量和高品位迅速成为世界上最具代表性的艺博会之一，而且无可争议地成为全美国办得最好的艺博会。
自1993年起，因威尔逊的退休，艺博会由汤玛士·贝克曼公司接手举办，参展作品转以当代艺术为主， 旨在将艺博会办成沟通当代艺术与市场的桥梁，被称之为“另类品味的艺术交易所”。近年来，它的规模越办越大。1999年时，其展馆面积达2.5万平方米，划分 为6个大展厅，共有24个国家的200余家画廊参展，参观人数超过4万人。它不失时机地吸收了当年威尼斯双年展、德国卡塞尔文献大展及里昂双年展的参展作品，向人们提供了当代全球性的艺术景观，反映出当代艺术的创作趋势及相应的市场走 向。值得一提的是，以旅加华人郑胜天为经纪人的“精艺轩”画廊，从1998年起， 已几次参加芝加哥国际艺博会，推出了中国当代艺术家徐冰、谷文达、黄永石永、严培明、陈箴及罗氏兄弟的作品，标志着中国当代艺术已逐渐被国际艺坛所认同。
在芝加哥，还有另一个艺博会——芝加哥国际画廊邀请展（IGI），它是由美籍犹太人、著名画商达维特·莱斯在1990年创办的。这个艺博会以具像和通俗性艺术作品为特色，与芝加哥国际艺博会相比，定位不同，品味各异，但作为对后者的补充，满足另一消费层次对于通俗性文化艺术消费的需求，同样取得了很大的成功。这是与主办者对市场的正确预测和大胆的挑战意识分不开的。

Chicago's citywide celebration of arts, antiques and culture with Art Chicago™ as its centerpiece, Artropolis™ attracts thousands of visitors to savor a rich menu of art and entertainment experiences that are unique to Chicago. For the visitors’ convenience and enjoyment, the international contemporary art show, a world-class antiques fair, and three satellite art shows run concurrently within The Mart Complex.
