
美国芝加哥国际艺博会(CIAE),由美国著名画商、芝加哥湖滨艺术中心董事长约翰·威尔逊利用密执安湖畔的海军码头为展场,于1979年创办。它自第一届开始, 即坚持严格的参展评审制度,并以其高质量和高品位迅速成为世界上最具代表性的艺博会之一,而且无可争议地成为全美国办得最好的艺博会。
自1993年起,因威尔逊的退休,艺博会由汤玛士·贝克曼公司接手举办,参展作品转以当代艺术为主, 旨在将艺博会办成沟通当代艺术与市场的桥梁,被称之为“另类品味的艺术交易所”。近年来,它的规模越办越大。1999年时,其展馆面积达2.5万平方米,划分 为6个大展厅,共有24个国家的200余家画廊参展,参观人数超过4万人。它不失时机地吸收了当年威尼斯双年展、德国卡塞尔文献大展及里昂双年展的参展作品,向人们提供了当代全球性的艺术景观,反映出当代艺术的创作趋势及相应的市场走 向。值得一提的是,以旅加华人郑胜天为经纪人的“精艺轩”画廊,从1998年起, 已几次参加芝加哥国际艺博会,推出了中国当代艺术家徐冰、谷文达、黄永石永、严培明、陈箴及罗氏兄弟的作品,标志着中国当代艺术已逐渐被国际艺坛所认同。
在芝加哥,还有另一个艺博会——芝加哥国际画廊邀请展(IGI),它是由美籍犹太人、著名画商达维特·莱斯在1990年创办的。这个艺博会以具像和通俗性艺术作品为特色,与芝加哥国际艺博会相比,定位不同,品味各异,但作为对后者的补充,满足另一消费层次对于通俗性文化艺术消费的需求,同样取得了很大的成功。这是与主办者对市场的正确预测和大胆的挑战意识分不开的。

Educational programming, an extensive VIP initative, and major exhibitions opening at Chicago's top institutions will be highlights of the weekend.

Chicago's citywide celebration of arts, antiques and culture with Art Chicago™ as its centerpiece, Artropolis™ attracts thousands of visitors to savor a rich menu of art and entertainment experiences that are unique to Chicago. For the visitors’ convenience and enjoyment, the international contemporary art show, a world-class antiques fair, and three satellite art shows run concurrently within The Mart Complex.
